In order to deal with the extra "headers" problem, among other things, it was necessary to introduce a second layer of buffering in the conversion of binary AOL and eWorld mail boxes. This has two major effects. First, memory use is significantly higher -- see the file ATTN AOL/eWorld USERS!. Second, it will probably be noticably slower, especially on large files. The price of progress...On the plus side, all known AOL and eWorld mail formats (ie, known by me) are now handled, including binary eWorld format (which I only just discovered existed...)

1. Limited support for cc:Mail ascii archives (*not* the compressed archives). Address headers will not be converted to internet form and "file items" (attachments) will simply appear in the text of the message. Otherwise this seems to be working ok.
2. Send To Application used to send an odoc AppleEvent to the designated application, passing the file specification as an argument. Now instead it launches the file specification. This means (a) the application itself will now be launched if it isn't currently running and (b) the application will become selected. Note that implications of (a), especially wrt Eudora: if it isn't running, the standard Eudora Settings will be launched (the one in System Folder:Eudora Folder:). If you want something else, you must launch Eudora yourself beforehand.

1. Files in some "generic" mail format are now handled very differently. See New Generic Headings for details. This change will significantly decrease the size of settings files, so it might not be a bad idea to trash your old settings file and have the application generate a new one (although it's not strictly necessary to do so).
2. The type/creator settings are friendlier, and have builtin Eudora and Z-Mail options.
3. MailConverter now handles multiple settings files. If you want to use this feature, you should definitely trash your old settings file and let the application generate a new one before you make copies of it.

1. Mailbox windows, which allow convenient appending to existing Eudora mailboxes, either with drag+drop or by conventional file selection.
2. Remote drag+drop file conversion! Just use Anarchie to display the remote folder, and drag any files you want to convert into a MailConverter window. This isn't really new but I'm just announcing it now...
3. New command, Tag File as Mailbox, which will set the type and creator of a file that's already in Eudora-compatible format (holding down the control key while dragging onto the MailConverter icon does the same thing).
4. For 7.5 users: changed the behavior of file dialogs so that it's no longer dependent on the Documents setting in the General Control panel.

1. Drag-awareness! First pass...See the description of the Special menu in Description for details. So far, you can drag text (eg from SimpleText or NewsWatcher), files, and folders (the latter two from the Finder). As soon as I figure out how, I'll add support for dragging NewsWatcher articles directly.
2. New setting, Send To Eudora, which if checked will send an AppleEvent to Eudora when a new mailbox is created. Important: This only works with the commercial Eudora! Also, Eudora must be running at the time for this to work -- it will not be auto-started.
Changes since 1.4:
1. MailConverter now handles America Online mail files and folders.
2. Files that are already in sendmail format should now be properly handled by the converter.
3. If a file is not in a recognized format, you now have the option of proceeding anyway. The converter will do its best to produce something reasonable by looking for typical mail headers. If you select "Proceed", the current file will be handled this way;
if you select "Proceed All", the current file and all subsequent files in the current operation will be handled this way (without asking you again); if you select "Cancel", the current file will not be converted; if you select "Cancel All", the current operation will be aborted.
4. Cmd-. now works to abort a multi-file conversion (it's checked after each file).
5. A new switch allows for breaking large (>32K) messages into smaller chunks. Headers are preserved but the (limited) special handling Eudora provides for split message doesn't quite work, and isn't likely to in the near future, since that special handling
depends on a .toc hack that I can't support in MailConverter. The default setting of this switch is off.
6. The Merge Dragged Files setting has been removed. If multiple files/folders are dragged onto the application icon, they will be merged by default. To disable this, hold the Command key down.

0. The signature is now officially registered (finally)! Unfortunately I got my third choice, which means the sig I was using on previous versions belongs to someone else. You should probably deleted all earlier versions of MailConverter, to be safe.
1. The two primary commands have been renamed:
Open Mailbox ==> Convert File (the command key is now C)
Open Directory ==> Convert Folder
2. The Append Mailbox command is gone altogether. Instead of this special command, you will now be asked if you want to append or overwrite if you select an existing mailbox for output.
3. There's one new command, Merge Folder. This will convert each file in the folder and write the merged results into a single output mailbox. NB: when you drag a folder onto the MailConverter icon, you will now be activating the Merge Folder command. Merge Folder is recursive — if it encounters a subfolder, the contents of that subfolder will be merged into the final destination mailbox.
4. One setting, Confirm On Overwrite, is now meaningless and has been removed.
5. There's a new setting, Default Input Folder, which does what it sounds like it does.

1. Now handles message digests! If you have a Eudora message that's a properly formatted digest, save it (without headers and without paragraph guessing), convert it, and the resulting mailbox will be the burst digest.
2. There' s now an Append Mailbox menu item (cmd-A) which will convert a file and append the messages in it onto the end of an existing mailbox.
3. One new setting: Truncate Output, which if checked, will truncate the output file name to 27 chars (Eudora-compatibility).
4. A minor (but real) memory leak has been corrected.
5. The handling of the Default Output Folder was considerably cleaned up and made more reliable.
#5 required a change to the structure of the preferences file. An entirely new preferences file will now be used, which means you lose the values in the old one. Sorry, it won't happen again (I hope).
Changes since 1.0:
1. An intermittent bug which would sometimes misplace the end-of-file of the output file has now been fixed. I don't know of any other outstanding bugs at the moment.
2. Several new settings have been added which sould make the conversion process even simpler. Important: you should trash your old preferences file, because the structure is changed (I should automate this, I know, but I haven't had the time yet).
3. NewsWatcher digests will now convert into the messages which it comprises.
4. I got rid of the Eudora-lookalike icon and also added the capability of dragging folders onto the icon (as a quick way to convert all the files within the folder). You may need to rebuild your desktop to see either of these changes if you already have an older version of MailConverter.
